Geared Up is an after-school program for kids in 3rd-12th grade. We're all about getting kids "Geared Up" for the STEM fields through designing, building, and programming their own robot to complete special challenges. Part of the program is about making robotics accessible to everyone, there are four different sub-programs being worked on that allow this to happen. Our program is available for those with hearing impairment, visual impairment, and those that are wheelchair bound, including those with muscular dystrophy. Each of these are slightly modified to work best with each groups strengths. We also work with public, charter, and private schools. We do this in an eight step program:
1. Build Mission Models ------ Familiarize students with Legos
2. 'Be the Robot' Activity ------ Understand things from the robot's perspective
3. Sensor Exploration ---------- Try out and experiment with each sensor the robot can use
4. Programming Tutorials ----- Students learn the basics of the code they will be using
5. Testing --------------------------Test the newly written code out on a pre-built basic robot
6. Mat/Mission Reveal --------- Students begin to strategize and form solutions to the missions their robots have been given
7. Robot Build -------------------- Students build their basic robot
8. Complete Missions ---------- Students use everything they have learned to complete the missions given, they write original code, design and build attachments for the robot, and form unique solutions to the problems they face.
